About

Katy Jackson currently lives and works in South West London. After completing her Art Foundation at Wimbledon School of Art she went on to study Illustration at Loughborough University, where her work focused on strong drawing skills, atmosphere and narrative. Having worked as an illustrator for 18 years she is now concentrating on creating her own artwork. She is personally concerned with the subjects of nature, climate change and local environment and these are recurring themes in her work. She paints in oils and also creates spitbite aquatint etchings

Etchings:
Katy creates her prints using the traditional printmaking technique of etching. Using fine layers of aquatints (melted rosin dust) on a polished copper plate, and then painting acid on the plate with a spit-bite technique. She gradually builds up tone and textures by exposing the metal to acid for different lengths of time. The deeper the etch the more ink will be held and the darker that area of the print. The metal plate can then be inked up ready for printing. A lot of planning is involved but with the complexity of the etching process there are always surprises and experimentation. Please take a look at the blog section for photos and an insight into the process.

Oil Paintings:
Katy’s paintings are oil paint on gesso board or linen. Please contact her for more examples. A small selection of limited edition reproduction prints are available too.

Artist Bio:
”With my artwork I’m constantly reaching to convey the emotions I elicit from natural world. Its wonder, awe, complexity but also fragility and the impact we have had on it. I’ve grown increasingly drawn to trying to capture the changing light of the sky. How its constant change reflects the precious passing of time, but also how we often overlook its beauty and that of the world around us and take so much for granted. In my Pylon paintings, inspired by the area I live, I wanted to focus on the beauty of the moment and also recognise our impact and consumption. Colour is the starting point for my paintings as it sets the tone and atmosphere and, for me, the emotion. Working in Oil paint gives me a depth of tone and colour I can’t achieve in other mediums.”
